Single vs 2-Stage Furnace: Which is Better in Ontario?

For Ontario winters, a 2-stage furnace is usually the better option. But, there is one situation where a single-stage furnace may make more sense.

BlogHeating & Cooling

Living in the Greater Toronto Area, I know firsthand how intense Ontario winters can be. As someone who also works in the HVAC industry, I faced a tough decision a couple of years ago when it was time to upgrade my furnace:

Should I stick with a single-stage furnace or upgrade to a 2-stage furnace?

I ultimately chose the 2-stage furnace and there were a few reasons why it made the most sense for me and my family.

What is a Single- Stage Furnace?

A single-stage furnace works at full capacity whenever it’s on. There are no in-between settings—it’s either blasting heat at full power or completely off.

In theory, this sounds like a simple, straightforward solution, but as someone who understands the demands of Ontario’s winters, I knew this “full blast” approach could have some drawbacks.

First, I knew that with a single-stage furnace it often left our house feeling unevenly heated. One room would be toasty warm while another would be chilly. This could get quite annoying at certain parts of the day when I would be hot or cold and my wife vice versa.

Plus, it seemed like it was always cycling on and off, which led to higher energy consumption.

What is a 2-Stage Furnace?

Unlike a single-stage furnace, a 2-stage furnace has two settings: a lower, energy-saving mode for most days and a high-power mode for when temperatures really drop.

Most of the time, my furnace runs in the lower setting, and it only switches to high when it’s truly needed—like during those especially frigid January days.

From my experience, the difference in comfort has been substantial. Our home is heated much more evenly now, with fewer cold spots and more consistent warmth. The 2-stage furnace’s ability to adjust according to heating needs keeps my family comfortable no matter how unpredictable the weather gets.

Single-Stage vs. 2-Stage Furnace breakdown

Here are the main things I considered when making my decision on which type of furnace to purchase.

Energy Efficiency & COst-Savings

Based on my own experience, the 2-stage furnace has proven more efficient in our 2,200 sqft home. On most winter days, it stays in the low-power setting, which means it uses less energy compared to my previous single-stage system.

I’d estimate that we’ve seen about a 10-15% reduction in energy bills since switching, which has made the initial cost of the upgrade worthwhile.

Comfort and Consistency

The most noticeable benefit for my family has been the consistent warmth throughout the house. No more hot and cold spots—the 2-stage system keeps temperatures steady. Our bedrooms are just as comfortable as our living room, which was rarely the case with our old single-stage furnace.

This consistency has made it a lot easier to enjoy our time indoors without constantly adjusting the thermostat.

Air Quality Benefits

Another benefit I’ve noticed is improved air quality. Since the 2-stage furnace runs more frequently on a lower setting, it helps circulate air more effectively throughout the home.

This means that dust and other particles don’t settle as much, and it’s made a real difference in reducing the dry, static-heavy air that Ontario winters are known for. This has been particularly helpful for my kids, who struggle with dry skin and allergies during winter.

The 2-Stage Furnace is Quieter

One really underrated part of the 2-stage furnace has been how much quieter it is compared to our old single-stage unit. Since it often runs at a lower setting, the noise level is significantly reduced.

I remember how loud the single-stage furnace was every time it kicked on—it would start with a loud blast, which was especially disruptive at night. The two-stage furnace, on the other hand, runs much more quietly.

Maintenance Requirements

While 2-stage furnaces are generally more complex than single-stage units, I’ve found that the maintenance isn’t significantly more challenging if you keep up with regular servicing. The 2-stage system has more components that need inspection—like the electronic controls that regulate the different stages—but with proper maintenance from an HVAC professional, it has been very reliable.

I schedule annual maintenance to ensure everything is working efficiently, and I’ve had fewer emergency issues compared to my old single-stage furnace. The extended lifespan and reduced strain on the system make these maintenance checks worthwhile.

Should I choose a Single Stage or 2-Stage Furnace?

If you’re trying to decide like I was, here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • Is Your Home Multi-Story or Have Larger Areas to Heat? My 2-stage furnace has been ideal for my 2,200 sqft, multi-story home, as it keeps temperatures consistent across all floors.
  • How Long Do You Plan to Stay? If you plan to stay in your home for the long term, a 2-stage furnace can pay off in energy savings.

In most situations, the 2-stage furnace is going to be the better, long-term option. However, if you have a small space then the single-stage furnace can be more cost effective, especially in the immediate short term.

Making the Right Choice for Ontario’s Winters

Looking back, I’m happy I chose the 2-stage furnace for my home. The combination of energy savings, consistent comfort, noise reduction and improved air quality has made all the difference during our long winters.

If you’re in Ontario and are on the fence, I’d highly recommend considering the upgrade to the 2-stage furnace—especially if you value efficiency and comfort as much as I do.
